9 Types of SMT Components You Should Know
SMT (or Surface Mount Technology) is changing how modern electronic devices are built, in that its components were designed from the beginning specifically for mounting to a printed circuit board, and not by the conventional method of placing leads into holes drilled in the board.
This guide aims to list the main components utilised in surface mount technology and exactly what they do…
Types of SMT Components You Should Know
#1 – Resistors
Main categories of SMT components include resistors. Most common is the chip resistor, which normally has a numerical code marked on it to indicate resistance value. Available in several standard sizes, including 0402, 0603, and 0805, with numbers indicating dimensions in hundredths of an inch. SMT resistors work on exactly the same principles as through-hole versions but offer enormous space savings with performance improvements particularly at high frequency since their lead length is minimized and therefore have very reduced parasitic inductance.

#2 – Capacitors
Another important family component is the capacitor and probably the most widely used are ceramic multilayer capacitors (MLCCs) in a range of package types, they offer good stability and reliability in quite small packages. These have the form of alternating layers of ceramic dielectric and metal electrodes. Another option is tantalum capacitors which provide higher values of capacitance, in fairly small packages, but being polarised they need to be oriented correctly when assembled. Electrolytic capacitors come also in SMT versions, mostly for when big values of capacitance are to be used.

#3 – Inductors and Transformers
Wire wound chip inductors contain a coil of wire around a ferrite core, while multilayer chip inductors use printed layers of conductors separated by magnetic material. Both have critical roles to play with regard to impedance matching and power conversion applications. SMT transformers are far larger than most surface mount components, although the size advantages over through-hole counterparts remain a key feature.

#4 – LED’s
In the world of SMT components, LEDs hold a special place considering the wide usage of LEDs in modern electronic devices. The components are varied in size and configuration-from very small chip LEDs for status indicators to larger and more powerful ones for lighting applications. Most SMT LEDs incorporate features like an integral lens or reflector for optimising the light output pattern. Many SMT LEDs have multiple colours within one package.

#5 – Oscillators and Crystals
SMT oscillators and crystals are used to provide timing references for electronic circuits. From simple crystal resonators in very small ceramic packages, to complete oscillator modules with all of the circuitry needed to generate stable clock signals, they make modern electronics design very easy in terms of clock circuit design.

#6 – Fuses
Fuses and other circuit protection devices in SMT packages are also crucial for electronic packages such as resettable fuses-known as polymeric PTC devices-standard fuses that melt and break the circuit when overheated, and several surge protection devices. Their surface mount format provides automatic assembly procedures while still retaining the required protection characteristics.

#7 – Radio Frequency (RF)
RF components represent a special class of SMT devices intended to be used at high frequencies: RF inductors, filters, baluns, and types of antennas. The surface mount format is advantageous for RF applications because it reduces lead lengths and parasitic effects that can become problematic at high frequencies.

#8 – Power
The main power components in SMT form include voltage regulators, DC-DC converters, and power management ICs. These devices usually require special consideration in thermal management and/or current handling capability. Many are packaged with exposed pads on their underside for better heat dissipation via the PCB.

#9 – Sensors
The sensor category in SMT components is one of the steadily growing categories, including temperature sensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and different types of environmental sensors. Complex sensing elements combined with processing circuitry are increasingly being integrated into single surface mount packages that can offer advanced measurement functionalities in small devices.
It is very important that the design engineer / technician understands the characteristics and applications of the various SMT components when working with modern electronics. The need for smaller, more innovative electronic devices continues to push SMT component designs, with an ever-emerging supply of package styles and integration levels.
